Wow! It's nearly over. Crazy. I have now left the hospital and am in Nairobi. I will spend a few days at the coast in a place called Mombassa, on the beach and site-seeing before I come home next week. Absolute madness. Time goes so fast! NEXT WEEK!
Right, apologies for the delay in the coming of this post. I have had a very bad stomach, been convinced i'd never be able to eat again! and had no energy for a few days but i'm better now. My friends the students came and brought food parcels and force fed and entertained me!
I was sad to leave the hospital because i've had such a great time there but equally i'm getting ready to be coming home and see everyone. I had a few more deliveries before I felt including one with the woman on the floor. She was happy there and didn't want to go on the bed as the staff were telling her to do so. I said why should she, just put the mattress on the floor. They argued, the baby came while they were arguing with the woman and hitting her trying to lift her onto the couch, so i just caught the baby. thankfully mother and baby were fine. News spread fast and everyone was congratulating me and saying how funny it was which gave me plenty of opportunity to tell of the physiology of why sitting, standing, etc are good positions for labour and delivery. sadly here they are hard to convinse and believe there will be cord prolapse if a woman is not lying down (even if there is good applpication of the presenting part)but more on that when i return. I was lucky enough to be able to perform a VE on a woman who was circumcised. It has reiterated my passion to help these women. You could barely admit a finger never mind pass a baby, she had to go for c/s. I also witnessed a woman coming from home delivery. She had been given "home episiotomy" the extend of which words cannot do justice to. The give bilateral episiotomy and because (as in this case) it is done in the dark and they don't suture the consequences are phenominal and this woman could barely walk and had been carried for 24hours to reach the hospital. she lost so much blood her HB was 3.4. this was her second baby. she is 15 years old. my heart could not/cannot believe what this poor young woman has gone through.
anyway, please forgive because I have to go. The cyber cafe i'm using is about to close. I miss you all terribly and I can't wait to come home and show you some of the 1000+ photos I have taken! I will try and update again before I leave but if not expect photos on here &facebook by the end of next week.
loads of love especially to you Delia as you start your gapyear!! Maybe you'd like to come to Ortum and give some much needed practice based teaching!
Love and miss everyone lots x x x

We're still reading! It sounds intense and I feel for you being so ill while out there without the normal support and comfort. Not surprised you've made so many friends there already - that sums you up!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing you soon and thank you for my hen party gift.

It must have been very difficult for you being ill out there. I'm so pleased you've got so much out of this. I'm looking forward to catching up with you for a full update when you get back.

Congratulations on your catch! I had my first water baby at Penrith on Monday - lovely!!!I can't bear to think of that poor lady with the home episiotomy - and an HB of 3.4 - poor, poor girl. What an experience for you - very moving. On a totally trivial note to bring you back to this reality - make sure Katy knows I am in on the Hen party - not long now! Am at a wedding tomorrow - next time it will be yours!!!! We missed you at Uni the other day - wasn't the same without you. Take care on your journey home and look forward muchly to catching up with you and hearing all about your adventure. Thinking of you loads.

Hi Sarah - we did indeed miss you! But goodness me what experiences you've had... we must surely get together and agree a plan for you to share some of this, soon (once you've had some R&R!). How hugely distressing some of your experiences have been, not to mention being poorly away from home. I am impressed at your 'fortitude' and your obvious passion for your work. I'm so glad you took up the challenge of taking your elective in Kenya, looking forward to hearing that you are home and to seeing you too - Jan X
