Hello All!
Internet is dodgey so I will have to keep this short and sweet!
I have arrived safe! It was raining on arrival so felt like home-from-home! Exctept this rain was warm. My first every flight was thoroughly enjoyable and I was lucky enough to have a window seat which meant I could look at everything and enjoy it all! Looking out over the dessert was amazing and some of the places you could see people living was unbelievable!!
We eventually arrived in Ortum on Sunday following a long journey which I will explain another time. It was interesting to say the least!
The poeple I have met so far are lovely. The hospital is very quaint. There is one labour ward with 2 beds in it about 50cm from each other, one with lithotomy stirrups. the floors are dusty and the place feels extremely basic. They are as sterile as can be but it is very poor and made me cringe on several occasions! There is a first stgae ward where women stay until mearing full dilation with about 5 beds in it, an antenatal ward and a post natal ward with 12 beds and a facility called Keror in which women slive and look after them selves during latter phases of pregnancy or if they have any problems eg. previous preterm delivery.
I almost made it to one delivery but missed it by 30 mins by the time we found out it was happening but we saw the suturing. Here women are given bilateral episiotomy if they are circumcised as this lady was so that was certainly interesting to observe. There was another woman in labour who was gravida 10 (8 of which had survived) but I was too tired to stay it would have been dangerous. I have only just recovered from all our travelling.
I have seen one baby of low birth weight and 3 weeks old with serious infection being resuscitated which was hard as they are a few years behind us in practice yet i didn't feel i could say anything as it's not like i'm as experienced as they are!! There were second year students performing the resuscitation which was hard hitting considering that's what I am!! I would not have felt a drop as confident as they appeared to be! The baby survived though and I hjave checked on it every day and so far it is doing well.
I have to go as the nuns want their computer back but I send you all lots of love and hope you are well. To my colleagues, I hope your placements are interesting and fun. Love to you all!
Sarah
P.S. the weather is too hot for sunbathing so I feel I will come back as white if not whiter than I set off so don't worry Katy!!! x

Hehe, So your not going to come back and be browner that me then haha.
ReplyDeleteI miss you like mad, I got your email i wish that my phone would let me send and recieve messages for you but will just have to use Michaels instead.
Glad that you enjoyed your 1st flight. How come you got a window seat, Iv never had one yet lol. Dont worry about the books keep reading the ones that you have and you will learn them word for word by the time you get back.
Also I think its just because its so different over there that your not as confident as then, I sure that you are quite capable of doing everything.
Anyway will keep it short as you dont get a lot of time on the computer.
Love you miss you loads,
Lots of love and hugs

Much love,
Mrs Blake xxxx
Glad to hear that you are ok even if things are so very different. You will gain confidence soon and feel like you have been there for ever. Have lots of fun and take lots of pictures and remember to keep smiling Love Mum x x x
ReplyDeleteHi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteSo great to hear that you are there and starting to settle. After our conversation the other day, the resuscitating sounds really scary! You will learn so much and gain so much valuable experience - you will come home a different person. Placement going well - on maternity next week. I am sure it will be a very different experience to yours! Keep wanting to text you and then realise I can't - miss you.
Keep safe and have fun!

P.S. It is never too hot for sunbathing!!!!!!!!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteJust to let you know that I'm reading along with you. Sounds like a rapid learning experience, and I imagine quite daunting and emotional at times. I will be thinking of you,
Love Sarah (Slater... too many Sarah's in the World!!)
WOW, amazing, scary, exhilarating and challenging. You will learn lots and so will the students already there when you get your confidence!
ReplyDeletelove Su and Ken
Hi Sarah - so good to hear from you and that you arrived safely. I suspect that "quaint" might be an understatement; it'll be interesting to hear just how staff there manage with their sparse resources... perhaps when you're back?
ReplyDeleteFor now - I'm full of admiration for you, hope you get enough sleep and (as another red-head) advise against sun-bathing! :)
Looking forward to the next installment - all best wishes - Jan X
